Best Thrift Scanner Apps in 2026

Dozens of apps promise to tell you what a thrift find is worth from a photo. The question that separates them: do they show what the item actually sold for — and say where that number comes from — or an AI guess? We checked each app's own App Store listing or website.

We make FlipTip. Facts about other tools come from their own websites and app store listings, checked October 2026 — sources at the bottom.

⚡ The short answer

Look for an app that names its data source (eBay sold listings at minimum), shows the actual sales you can click, and does the profit math after fees. Watch out for weekly subscriptions — $4.99 a week is about $260 a year.

What to look for in a thrift scanner app

  • A named source for prices. "AI estimate" or "trained on millions of sales" doesn't tell you whether the number is what the item actually sold for.
  • Sales you can see. The best apps show the individual recent sales — price and date — so you can check the match yourself.
  • Asking vs. sold. Active listings are what sellers hope for; completed sales are what buyers paid. They can be far apart.
  • Profit after fees. A $40 sale on eBay leaves you about $34 after fees, before shipping and what you paid.
  • Subscription maths. Weekly plans add up: $4.99 a week is roughly $260 a year.

How FlipTip handles it

FlipTip identifies the exact item from a photo, a barcode (books, CDs, vinyl, games) or a whole table with Batch scan, then checks real completed sales on eBay — in the US also Mercari and Poshmark when eBay has few — on paid plans and during the trial. You see the typical price, the range, the latest sales with dates, your profit after the marketplace's fees, the most you should pay, how fast it sells, a 0–100 Deal Score and a WORTH IT / SKIP verdict. On the Free plan it gives an AI estimate, and says so.

FAQ

What is the best app to scan items for resale value?

The best ones identify the item from a photo and show real completed sales with a named source, not just an AI estimate. FlipTip, Underpriced and Underpriced AI all use eBay sold prices on paid plans; check what each costs for the number of scans you do.

Is there a free thrift scanner app?

FlipTip has a free plan (3 photo scans a day with an AI estimate, plus barcode scans for books, CDs, vinyl and games) and a 30-day trial with real sold prices, no card. Google Lens is free but shows store prices for new products, not resale values.

Does Google Lens show what items are worth?

Google Lens is built for shopping: it finds the product and shows where to buy it new and for how much. It doesn't show what used items actually sold for on resale marketplaces.

Are thrift scanner apps accurate?

They're as good as their data and their identification. An app that shows the actual recent sales of the exact item lets you check; one that only gives a number asks you to trust it.
