How Accurate Is FlipTip?

A blind test against real eBay sales. We take items that just sold on eBay, give FlipTip only the photo — never the title or the price — and compare its answer with what the item actually sold for. Every test is listed below, with a link to the sale.

Short answer

In the last 30 days FlipTip was tested blind on 135 real eBay sales. From one photo it named the exact model in 53% of them, and at least the right brand and product line in 90%. Pricing is measured separately: its price was typically within $36 of the real sale on a $100 item, 33% of its prices were within 20% of the sale, and 68% of the sales fell inside the price range it showed. For scale: even the median of all other recent sales of the exact same item missed a single sale by $25 on $100 (41% within 20%) — on those same tests FlipTip's price missed by $36.

Natural spread: the benchmark for any price checker

For 128 of these sales we also took the median of all the other recent sales of the exact same item — a perfect answer, if you knew the item exactly and had every one of its sales. Here is how far that perfect answer, and FlipTip, landed from the real sale:

Median of the other sales (perfect knowledge)$25
FlipTip (photo only, same sales)$36

Typical miss on a $100 sale. Within 20% of the sale: perfect answer 41%, FlipTip 32%. The gap between the two bars is what is left to improve; the rest is how much single sales of the same item differ.

Naming the right item is not the right price. Naming the item is the first step; the price is a separate test, and a harder one: the same item sells for very different amounts depending on condition, completeness and the buyer on the day. So FlipTip can name an item exactly right and still miss its sale price — that's why the app shows a price range and the real sales behind it, not a single number.

"Typical miss" is the median gap between FlipTip's price and the real sale price: on a $100 sale, half of FlipTip's prices were within $36. Lean: 5% low at the median.

Does one more photo help?

A sold listing gives the test above only one photo — the hardest case. In the app, FlipTip asks for one more photo when it isn't sure of the model (under 88%, or when it could only match the model by its look and read no model number), and Multi Scan takes up to 5 photos of the same item. To measure what that changes, we take eBay listings that have several photos and identify each one three ways, judged against the listing title like the test above. 49 listings in the last 60 days.

On the same listings as the second row, the exact model went from 73% with one photo to 83%. FlipTip asked for one more photo on 39% of these listings. * In 8 of those, none of the listing's photos showed what FlipTip asked for (for example the underside or the label), so the extra photo couldn't be tested — those listings are left out of the second row instead of being counted as a hit or a miss. Counted as misses, the second row would be 69% exact model. When it was sure from one photo, it named the exact model in 83% of those cases; in the other 17% it was sure but the model was not exact — one more photo can't fix those, because FlipTip doesn't ask for it.

Limits: listing photos are usually clearer than photos taken at a stall, so real scans can do somewhat worse. The extra photo is the listing photo that best shows what FlipTip asked for (the label, the back, the underside); when FlipTip asked for no particular view, the second photo is used. These are identification results only — prices are measured in the sold-price test above, from one photo.

Where the misses come from

Why is there a miss if the prices are real sales?

FlipTip doesn't guess the price of the one listing being tested — it gives the typical price from the other recent sales of that item (the tested sale is left out, so the answer can't contain it). And single sales of the same item spread widely. An example — one camera model, sold 10 times:

$60 $75 $80 $95 $100 $110 $120 $140 $160 $200 typical price $105

The typical price is $105. Even that perfect answer is 75% off the sale at $60 and 48% off the one at $200 — while it's within 5% of the sales at $100 and $110. Condition, a missing lens or charger, the original box, the day an auction ended and the buyer on the day all move single prices. That spread is the part of the miss no app can remove; it's why FlipTip shows a range and the real sales behind it, not one number.

Measured, not just an example: for 128 of the tested sales, the median of all the other recent sales of the exact same item missed the tested sale by $25 on $100 — that's the natural spread. FlipTip, working from the photo alone, missed the same sales by $36. See the comparison above.

The rest of the miss is the part FlipTip works on: naming the item less precisely (the prices then cover several models), now and then the wrong item, and items with too few recent sales, where you get the AI's estimate instead.

How the price is made, and what changed

Sold prices vs. the AI estimate

In eBay countries, FlipTip checks real completed sales of the item and combines them with the AI's estimate: the more sales it finds, and the more exactly the model is known, the more they count. Where it finds too few, you get the AI's estimate from its own web price research — the same thing users see in countries where eBay isn't a local market. Both were measured on the same photos.

Changed on 19 October 2026: before, FlipTip's price was simply the median of the sales it found. Re-checked on the 131 tests published at that time, combining the sales with the estimate — and no longer counting sales of lots, graded copies or broken items when the scanned item is a single, ungraded one — cut the typical miss from $37 to $29 on a $100 sale, and more prices landed within 20% of the sale (24% → 34%). Every test on this page is priced the way the app prices today — from the AI estimate and the sales its own scan found at the time, combined with today's rule — so the number is what you get now, not a mix of old and new methods. The rule was chosen on the tests up to 19 October; the tests since then are the independent check.

Changed on 24 October 2026: sales that are not the scanned item are left out more strictly — sets the earlier filter missed (a set of 4 plates written as "s/4", "6 vintage dinner plates", "Pair of … chairs"), graded cards for an ungraded one, and solid-gold pieces for a gold-tone one (and the other way round). When too few sales are left, the price is the AI estimate. This applies to tests from that date on; earlier tests keep the sales their scan found.

✓ exact model · ≈ right item, less specific · ✗ wrong item — judged against the eBay listing title. ● the sale was inside FlipTip's range. "Others" = the median of the other recent sales of the same item (the natural-spread benchmark). "Misses only" = wrong item, or a price more than 50% off the sale.

How the test works

  1. Real sales only. Items come from our value guides — collectibles, cameras, watches, sneakers, records, LEGO and more. For each, we pull its most recent completed sales on eBay.com and pick sales of that exact item at random. Best Offer sales are left out, because eBay shows the asking price there, not what was paid.
  2. Photo only. FlipTip gets the listing's first photo. It never sees the title, the price or the listing.
  3. The same app you use. The photo runs through the same identification check, price research and analysis as a Hustler scan by a user in the US — real sold prices, as on every paid plan and in the 15-day Dealer trial every new account gets.
  4. The tested sale is left out. When FlipTip checks real sold prices for the item, the sale being tested is removed from them, so the answer can't contain the number it's graded on.
  5. Graded against the sale price. Miss = the gap between FlipTip's price and the real sale price, as a share of the sale price. "Inside the range" = the sale fell inside the price range FlipTip showed. A range aims to hold about 70 % of sales: its width is set from earlier tests and checked on newer ones, and the price in its middle never moves with it. Identification is judged against the listing title.
  6. Nothing is cherry-picked. Every test from the last 30 days counts and is listed above. 1 scan failed without an answer in that time and is not in the numbers.

What this test doesn't tell you

  • Listing photos are usually clearer than a quick photo in a store, so identification at a flea market can be harder.
  • One sale is one buyer on one day. Even a perfect estimate misses single sales — prices for the same item spread widely (the median of the other sales of the exact item missed by $25 on $100 in this test).
  • US eBay and US dollars only. In other countries FlipTip also uses local marketplaces, which this test doesn't cover.
  • The item mix follows our value guides, so it leans toward collectibles and branded goods.

Questions about the accuracy test

Is FlipTip accurate?

In the last 30 days FlipTip was tested blind on 135 real eBay sales. From one photo it named the exact model in 53% of them, and at least the right brand and product line in 90%. Pricing is measured separately: its price was typically within $36 of the real sale on a $100 item, 33% of its prices were within 20% of the sale, and 68% of the sales fell inside the price range it showed. For scale: even the median of all other recent sales of the exact same item missed a single sale by $25 on $100 (41% within 20%) — on those same tests FlipTip's price missed by $36. Single sales of the same item vary a lot, so treat the price range as the answer, not one number.

How close can any price checker get?

Not to zero. For 128 of the tested sales we also took the median of all the OTHER recent sales of the exact same item — the answer you would get if you knew the item perfectly and had every one of its sales. Even that benchmark missed the tested sale by $25 on a $100 item, and only 41% of its answers were within 20% of the sale. On the same tests FlipTip's price missed by $36. So most of any app's miss is the natural spread of single sales; only the difference between the two numbers is room for improvement. Ask any price checker that publishes one number how it compares with this benchmark.

Does FlipTip name the exact model?

From one photo of an item that sold on eBay, FlipTip named the exact model in 53% of the tests and at least the right brand and product line in 90%. In a separate test on 41 eBay listings with several photos, the exact model went from 73% with one photo to 83% when FlipTip asked for one more photo, and 76% with Multi Scan (up to 5 photos). When it cannot read the model, FlipTip says it is not sure and asks for one more photo — usually of the label, the back or the underside — instead of guessing.

Does "right item in 90%" mean 90% of prices are right?

No — they are two different measurements. Identification asks whether FlipTip named the right item (90% at least the brand and product line, 53% the exact model). Price accuracy asks how close its price came to what that exact item actually sold for: typically within $36 on a $100 sale, with 33% of prices within 20% of the sale. Pricing is harder because the same item sells for very different amounts depending on condition, completeness and the buyer on the day.

Why is there a miss at all if FlipTip uses real sold prices?

Because FlipTip gives the typical price from the OTHER sales of the item — the tested sale itself is left out — and single sales of the same item spread widely. Example: if one camera sold 10 times for $60, $75, $80, $95, $100, $110, $120, $140, $160 and $200, the typical price is $105. Even that perfect answer is 75% off the $60 sale and 48% off the $200 one. Condition, missing parts, the box, the day an auction ended and the buyer all move single prices. The rest of the miss comes from naming the item less precisely (prices then cover several models) and from items with too few sales, where FlipTip falls back to an AI estimate.

Which items is FlipTip most accurate for?

In the last 30 days, prices were closest for electronics & games (typical miss $22 on $100) and furthest off for collectibles ($53). The table "Where FlipTip is most reliable" on this page shows every group with its number of tests.

How is FlipTip's accuracy tested?

We take items that just sold on eBay.com, give FlipTip only the first photo of the listing and run it through the same identification and price check a paying user gets. Its answer is then compared with what the item actually sold for, and the identification with the listing title. The tested sale is left out of the sold prices FlipTip checks, so the answer can't contain it.

Does FlipTip see the eBay title or the sale price?

No. FlipTip gets the photo only — never the listing title, the description or the price.

What does "typical miss" mean?

It is the median gap between FlipTip's price and the real sale price, as a share of the sale price. A typical miss of $36 on a $100 sale means half of FlipTip's answers were closer than that and half were further off.

How often is the accuracy test updated?

New sales are tested continuously and the numbers always cover the last 30 days; the date of the newest test is at the top of this page. Every test in that period is listed on this page, including the ones FlipTip got wrong.

Why aren't users' own scans used for the test?

Because nobody knows for sure what a scanned item later sold for. A completed eBay sale has a known, public price, so every answer can be checked against it — and anyone can open the sale and check it too.
