How eBay fees are calculated

1

The fee is on the total, not the price

eBay's final value fee is charged on everything the buyer pays: the item price, the shipping you charge and the sales tax. Free shipping lowers the fee — but you pay the label.

2

Category decides the rate

Most things pay 13.6%. Books and music pay 15.3%, cards and coins 13.25%, guitars 6.7%; sneakers of $150 or more pay 8% with no per-order fee; bags, jewelry and watches have their own bands.

3

Then the per-order fee

$0.40 per order, or $0.30 when the order total is $10 or less.

4

Your profit

What eBay pays out, minus the shipping label, what you paid for the item and any other costs (packaging, mileage).

FAQ

How much does eBay take from a sale?

For most categories on eBay.com: 13.6% of the total sale (item price, shipping and sales tax) up to $7,500, plus $0.40 per order ($0.30 for orders of $10 or less). On a $50 item with $8 shipping and no tax, that is $7.89 + $0.40 = $8.29.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee is on the total the buyer pays, including the shipping you charge and the sales tax. With free shipping there is no shipping in the total — but the label comes out of your pocket.

Does eBay charge its fee on sales tax?

Yes, sales tax is part of the total the fee is calculated on, even though eBay collects and pays the tax itself. Add your buyers' usual tax rate for an exact number; the US average is roughly 7%.

Are Promoted Listings fees extra?

Yes. With Promoted Listings you pay the ad rate you set on top of the final value fee, when the sale comes through the ad. Enter your ad rate to see it.

What is a good profit margin on eBay?

Many resellers aim to at least double their money on cheap items (100% ROI) and accept a lower ROI on expensive, fast-selling ones. What matters is the profit in dollars after fees, shipping and the time it takes to sell.

How do I know what it will sell for?

Look at sold listings, not asking prices. FlipTip does it from one photo: it identifies the item, pulls its real completed eBay sales and shows this same math with a buy-or-skip verdict.
